Photography is our bread and butter. It's everywhere we look - in magazines, on television screens, on our cell phones and computer desktops.

Many of the pictures we see are snapshots, the work of friends and family. They capture our smiles and our grimaces, our dinner parties and beach days. As much as we cherish these photos that document the every day, there are other pictures, often taken by professionals, that brand themselves upon our eyes.

These are the pictures that make an impact on our lives - the Vietnam protester turned victim, the fallen soldier. Every week photographers around the world capture the globe's details through the camera's lens. Some of these stolen moments are amusing, some terrifying, some tragic. Through photographs we see the disaster and we feel the pain or joy.

From the car bombs to dog fights, This Week in Pictures brings you a selection of the best photos taken all over the globe in the last week.
