The Late Shift: Pimp My Weekend

May 30th Edition

Thursday

Vega Under Fire/Sunset Lily/Ten 13 Concept/Select Start @ Yabo

If you’ve been complaining about the lack of a live local music in Southwest Florida, it’s time to shut your pie hole. Not one, not two, not three, but four bands will be hitting the stage at Yabo in Fort Myers this Thursday night for a show that will be pumping out everything from punk rock to power pop to emotronic for your thirsty ears. Yum. 8 p.m., $5.

DJ Rise @ Blu Sushi (Fort Myers)

Sushi and electro house lounge music go together like Bud Light and Lynard Skynard, but taste much better. Down a few lava drops (mmmm), sip a saketini and bob your head slowly to DJ Rise’s smooth beats. Each bob brings you one second closer to the weekend. 10 p.m.

Friday

DJ Xcentrik @ Sahra Hookah Lounge

Oh my god - there's finally a hookah lounge in Fort Myers. Stop what you're doing and go smoke sweet, fruit-flavored tobacco out of large water pipes immediately. With DJ Xcentrik spinning house and techno you'll almost feel like you're on South Beach, that is until you step out onto McGregor Blvd. 9 p.m.

Sex in the City with DJ Griff Gotti @ Wahoo’s

Remember Sex in the City? Yea, it was that show about four adult women living in New York and looking for love and a good lay. What does it have to do with DJ Griff Gotti rocking a Friday night hip hop party at Naples’ new bar and grill, Wahoo’s? Nothing. But hey, it still sounds good doesn’t it? 10 p.m. 21+

Saturday

DJ Battle @ Sanibel Steakhouse

They are masters of their craft with hands as quick as lightning and ears attuned to the slightest vibration. And this weekend they do battle for you at Sanibel Nites. DJ Hernan Markowicz takes on DJ Lee Johnson spinning house on the patio, and it’s Anthony Martin vs. DJ KS1 blasting hip-hop and R&B in the main room. Now, who wants to have a dance fight? 10 p.m. 21+ $10

Fake Problems/Look Mexico/Vega Under Fire @ Fleishmann’s Skate Park

An all-ages outdoor concert with real musicians playing original songs is kind of like a pipe dream in Naples. This Saturday clear your head of the Jimmy Buffet cover-cob webs and head for Fleishmann’s Skate Park where you can join the enthusiastic crowd rocking out to tunes from these local bands. 8 p.m.

Worth the Drive:

The Brazilian Film Festival of Miami

The shwag bags at the Brazilian Film Festival of Miami may not be stuffed with iPods and Gucci sunglasses, but you’re probably not getting one anyway. What you will get if you pay a visit to Miami from June 1 to June 9 is a collage of stylishly crafted Brazilian movies of all lengths and subjects screening at various venues around town. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the festival is kicking off this year with a free outdoor screening of the 2006 winner followed by a samba dance party. June 1-10. Various locations, Miami.
