Summer Movies

Keep Cool and Dry with these flicks

It’s finally starting to feel like summer. And with the onset of the oppressive heat it is only a matter of time until we are dealing with rain everyday around late afternoon. The best way to beat the heat and rain? Movies. Whether you prefer to stay at home and rent DVD’s or go out and see the brand new movies, there are quite a few films slated for release this coming month.

Movie Theater

The Incredible Hulk

June 13th

The second large-budget superhero movie to be released in a matter of months, The Incredible Hulk looks very promising. The Incredible Hulk follows scientist Bruce Banner, played by Edward Norton, who has an “issue” where, when provoked, he turns into the Hulk. The Hulk’s problems stem mainly for the U.S. Army, which seeks to manipulate the Hulk for their own purposes. Granted this movie has been done wrong so many times in the past it was only a matter of time until someone did the series some justice. But with Ed Norton in the leading role opposite Liv Tyler, we might finally have a Hulk we can be proud of.

The Happening

June 13th

M. Knight Shyamalan has created great movies such as: The Signs, Unbreakable, and The Sixth Sense, but even with his penchant for creepy supernatural thrillers, The Happening is his first to achieve an ‘R’ rating. In the movie Marky Mark takes a break from his rapping and underwear ads to lead a group of people away from a “happening,” that is causing people everywhere to commit suicide, if you’ve seen the trailer, you can testify this is scary in a way that we haven’t seen for quite some time. This one promises to be M. Knight’s creepiest by far.

Get Smart

June 20th

Based off of the ‘60s television show, Get Smart looks to continue the almost long forgotten idea of a decent spoof type of movie. In the film Carrell is a lowly analyst for a spy agency who upon his field promotion must rely on his partner, Agent 99, played by Anne Hathaway, to complete his mission. Honestly, this movie could potentially go either way, this is the safest bet for a Office or 40 Year Old Virgin fan.

The Love Guru

June 20th

Mike Myers’ first live-action, non-prosthetic laden role since the third installment of Austin Powers, The Love Guru follows Pitka, Myers, who is, as the name implies, a love guru. Pitka is brought to the U.S. to help a professional athlete cope with his relationship troubles. Myers has the ability to create a great script and then stay with the film through its completion, as he did with Austin Powers and Wayne’s World. Hopefully The Love Guru is just a continuation of Myers’ stellar on-screen record.

WALL∙E

June 27th

The release of WALL∙E marks some dissention in the Disney camp. Apparently the folks at Pixar blame Disney for their past movie, Ratatouille, not receiving the kind of marketing it needed to become a top ten movie, as most of Pixar’s movies do. So Pixar has decided to take it upon themselves to promote their new space-age movie WALL∙E. Set in the year 2700, the movie follows a robot whose job is to collect trash. But what kind of Pixar movie would this be without a giant adventure? The robot one day comes across “the key” to allow mankind return to an earth that they left for some reason or another. So, normal Pixar type of plot, but there isn’t any dialogue in the movie...I think Pixar is just trying to see how cheap they can make a movie and still have every elementary school student in the world go to see it.

Wanted

June 27th

Wanted tells the story of a slacker whose father is murdered and he is recruited by an assassin agency known as ‘The Fraternity’ to avenge his death. The rest is a relatively fresh take on a somewhat tired genre. Much of the action is entirely unrealistic so an open mind will probably be needed for the movie to be enjoyable. In the leading role is James McAvoy, a relatively green actor who has a very strong supporting cast behind him that includes, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie. McAvoy might be first billed but the audience will most likely be there for Jolie.

DVD RELEASE

Be Kind Rewind

June 17th

This movie follows two men, Jack Black and Mos Def, who accidentally destroy every movie in a movie rental store. To keep the one customer the store has, an elderly lady, the duo decides to recreate the movies that they destroyed. They go about recreating The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop. Be Kind Rewind is an indie film that probably just suffered in the way that most indies do, lack of wide-spread marketing.

Fool’s Gold

June 17th

Unless you are a die-hard McConaughey/Hudson fan, this movie probably fell somewhat short in the theaters. Fool’s Gold is one of those movies that you are better off just renting at home. Fool’s Gold follows McConaughey’s character on a search for buried treasure, along the way he reunites with his ex-wife and they go off and find treasure together. The chemistry between the duo however more than livens up a rather contrived plot.
