Blood tailgate kicks off start of upcoming donation drives

Football season is here, and with it comes tailgating.

But for the NCH Community Blood Center it means the return of “Tailgate For Life In Paradise,” Southwest Florida's biggest blood drive event.

The blood drive will be held today and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m at the Mission Square Plaza off of Pine Ridge Road, east of Goodlette-Frank Road.

As a further incentive, all successful donors - those at least 16 years old and who weigh at least 110 pounds - will receive a complimentary NCH Wellness Center three-day guest pass, a $10 Cruise Naples gift card and a Royal Scoop Homemade Ice Cream gift certificate.

Participants will also automatically be eligible for a chance to win a grand prize package, one being a Lovers Key Resort 'staycation' package for two; a 10-person sightseeing or sunset cruise package; or even a 15-person in home cooking session with Chef Patric from Patric's Restaurant.

Prizes also include a pair of Disney-themed park admission tickets, and one of two prize packages for four people to Disney on ice at Germain Arena.

Blood can be donated every 56 days, and even those taking medications, such as aspirin, blood pressure, cholesterol and thyroid medications, insulin pills, or injections, birth control, hormone replacement or antidepressants, are welcome.

The NCH blood center is urging those who are able to donate, to come out and help save a life, since blood becomes perishable after 42 days. They have found that 97 percent of the population does not give blood, and during hurricane season, having a supply is vital.
