— Bonita Springs firefighters were so concerned about assisting local charities, they were willing to lose their shirts to help.

The Ninth Annual Bonita Springs firefighter calendars are currently on sale. The calendars, which feature photos of partially-uniformed, muscular Bonita firefighters are sold to raise money for local charities.

Dave Brewer, a fire department lieutenant who has posed for the calendar every year, admitted that it’s good motivation for him to stay in shape, so he look good for the cameras. Plus, the experience of having women swarming around him seeking his autograph on his photo is “kind of cool,” he said. Yet the biggest reward, he said, comes from seeing charities benefit from the calendar.

Fifty percent of calendar will go to the Bonita Springs Assistance Office, a non-profit that offers temporary assistance to needy Bonita families. The remaining funds will go toward scholarships and other charities.

“We keep everything local,” said Debbi Redfield, the Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District spokeswoman.

Redfield said the calendars make great gifts.

“A lot of people buy them for their daughters and granddaughters,” she said. They also make great dorm room calendars.

The Estero Fire District is introducing a charity firefighter calendar this year too.

The majority of the proceeds are going toward fighting breast cancer through the Partners for Breast Cancer Care, a local non-profit that provides education and support for women with breast cancer.

Some Estero firefighters will appear at the Ladies Night Out event sponsored by Partners for Breast Cancer on Friday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Alico Road in San Carlos Park.

Bonita Springs firefighter calendars can be purchased online at www.firemenscalendar.com or at the following Bonita Springs locations: Best of Everything, Cosmotique Salon and Spa, Dolly’s Restaurant, Heaven Scent Flowers and Jean Nicole Hair Salon.

Estero firefighter calendars can be picked up beginning today for $15 at the Estero Fire Rescue Administration building located at 21500 Three Oaks Parkway in Estero from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
