Art news: 'Florida's Got the Blues' opens Wednesday on Marco

Blues party Wednesday

"Florida's Got the Blues," a traveling exhibition from the Museum of Florida History that details Florida's contribution to this American music genre, opens Wednesday at the Marco Island Historical Museum with music and a reception.

The event begins with a Wednesday wine and cheese reception from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring local artist Little Eddie, of Little Eddie and the Fat Fingers.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Florida's Got the Blues" will be on display through March 30, bringing photos, text panels, graphic banners, an interactive band stage and more, tracing the Sunshine State's blues heritage.

Soiree at the Garden

With what promises to be a lively New Year's Pops performance, Anton's Ensemble Soirée takes to the stage at 7 p.m. Wednesday in at Naples Botanical Garden, Windstar Room.

Anton's Ensemble Soirée has performed for more than a decade in Southwest Florida, as formal pops concert headliners and as the ensemble for many private occasions.

The ensemble's repertoire spans centuries of musical styles, from waltzes, fox trots and tangos, fiery gypsy airs and heartwarming medleys, to popular American jazz, Latin and pop standards. 

It is led by violinist Anton Sikuta, former concertmaster of the State Opera Orchestra, Darmstadt, Germany, and of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, Wiesbaden, Germany.

The concert is one of the Erich Kunzel Community Concert Series organized by Bayshore Cultural and Performing Arts Center, Inc. (CAPA).

Bonita workshops

The Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs is offering two three-day workshops for people serious about learning techniques and organization:

■ Impressionist Painting and Drawing Workshop: With Dmitri Wright, teaching the techniques and methods used by the impressionist masters while participants develop a personal style.

Students will learn through lecture and demonstration, the principles of vision, light, color, palette, optical mixing, brush strokes, composition and application. Mediums are oil and acrylic.

There is a demonstration for those interested from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2.

■ Put it Together Workshop: Miles Laventhall facilitates this three-day event in which participants will create a multimedia wall hanging that combines drawing, painting, assemblage and sculpture skills, into a narrative that speaks from their hearts.

Learn to combine drawing, painting and photo images with found objects and materials with personal significance to you, and support a theme.

Workshop: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.Friday-Sunday, Jan. 18-20
