It was the annual wearing of the tartans, for the raising of the funds. St. Andrew's Society in Naples, which appreciates all things Scottish, held its annual gala at the Club Pelican Bay Nov. 11. The club meets for gala social events, contributes to charitable causes and offers scholarships for Study in Scotland, funded through FGCU.
The St. Andrew's Society of southwest Florida, Inc. was started in 1992 and incorporated in 1998. It is an organization of people of Scottish descent that exists to preserve and promote the Scottish heritage. The St. Andrew's Ball is one of its traditional annual events, held in anticipation of St. Andrew's Day, Nov. 30.
To date the group has awarded scholarships to three FGCU students for their "Study in Scotland" experience. Its main fundraiseris in the spring, and last year raised more than $5,000 for the fund at FGCU. This year the group is planning to merge its major fundraiser with Tartan Day USA, which is April 6.
