Mozart Requiem Tuesday
Mozart's Requiem is brought to life by the young Ave Maria University Chamber Choir. A professional orchestra of 25 musicians will accompany the choir, conducted by Timothy McDonnell, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive, Naples.

Bonita Center special events
The Art Center of Bonita Springs has several events for art lovers and budding artists in the next several weeks. All events are at the center, 26100 Old U.S. 41 Road, Bonita Springs, unless otherwise noted. Call the Center for the Arts at 495-8989 to register for classes.
■ Art walk 5-8 p.m. today: Artists create at the Promenade, 26811 South Bay Drive at U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs. Live music of Dedicated Soul, refreshments and art are at the center from 5 to 8 p.m. Following that is "Locals Live," a free showcase of local talent including Improv Anonymous from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Promenade Cafe. Refreshments are available.
■ "Alla Prima, Alla Fun" abstract tryptich class 5:30-8 p.m. Nov. 1. For those who think they can't draw a stick figure, but want to try, alla prima is a style of completing a painting in one painting session. Staff will guide participants through the painting process step by step. Wine and pizza included. The price for the evening is $42 per person.
■ "Big, Bold, Beautiful Flowers" 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 12-16. Birgit O'Connor teaches how to to paint dramatic flowers in this watercolor workshop. Cost: $535 members, $585 nonmembers. There's a demonstration 4-6 p.m. Nov. 11..
■ "Painting Boot Camp/Oil & Pastels" 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 12-16. Stephanie Birdsall teaches this workshop that starts with basics, or allows students to relearn them in a new way. Paint without lines, work with still life, learn the basics of selecting the best landscape photos from which to work and how to use a limited palette approach.Cost: $545 members, $595 nonmembers. There's a demonstration 1-3 p.m. Nov. 11.
Basham opens series
The first formal Heath Series of recitals opens at 3 p.m. Nov. 4 with a concert by Glenn Basham, concertmaster of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, with pianist Vince Maggio. The series, at the Violin Shop of Naples, 16355 Vanderbilt Beach Drive, Bonita Springs, features area and nationally known artists in an intimate 50-seat setting.
Basham has served as concertmaster at music festivals including the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming, the Colorado Music Festival, the Hot Springs Music Festival and the Pine Mountain Music Festival. He has also served as concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. Basham also is first violinist in the Bergonzi String Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami.
Vince Maggio was director of jazz piano at the University of Miami School of Music Jazz Studies for 34 years and has served as faculty artist at the Aspen Music Festival for 10 years. He has given concerts and clinics all over the U.S., Canada, Italy, and Costa Rica.

The concert will be solo classical works by Basham for the first half, and jazz duo pieces for the second. A reception follows.
Singalong 'Messiah' tickets out
Tickets to the 10th annual "Singalong Messiah," to be performed by the Voices of Naples at 3 p. m. Nov. 18, are now available for advance purchase. The event will be at Naples United Church of Christ, 5200 Crayton Road, Naples. Under the direction of Douglas Renfroe, artistic director, the chorus will be accompanied by professional soloists and a chamber orchestra of members of the Naples Philharmonic and the southwest Florida Symphony orchestras.

Season or single opera tickets for Florida Grand Opera in Miami are available with bus transportation and dinner. Davison in Smithsonian
The Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. has selected the work of a Naples artist, Lynn Davison, to be among the portraits in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. The juried exhibition includes 48 works created from traditional media such as oil paintings, drawings and photographs as well as unusual materials such as rice, glitter, thread and video. The exhibition will be on view from March 23, 2013, through Feb. 23, 2014. Davison's work, titled "Modesty," will also be in competition for the seven win cash awards, with a first prize award of $25,000 and a commission to create a portrait of a living individual for the museum's permanent collection. The prizes will be announced at a private event March 22.
