The 139th Kentucky Derby — the “Run for the Roses,” or the most exciting two minutes in sports — will have a post time of 6:24 p.m. Saturday at Churchill Downs, Louisville. NBC Sports Network will cover all the pre- and postrace events, and the Derby will be televised live on NBC, beginning at 4 p.m.
The following are events happening locally Saturday, May 4, for the Kentucky Derby:
Women should wear their best hat and men their crazy pants for a contest starting at 3 p.m. at the Kentucky Derby Day party at Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track, 10601 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs. The contest will be hosted by Paul Conrad of WAVV, and the winners will be announced at 5 p.m. The doors of the track will open at 9:45 a.m. with a dining room buffet, simulcasting of every race from Louisville and mint juleps to sip as you watch the races. Fancy hats and Southern attire are encouraged for the 4 p.m. party at Tavern on the Bay, 489 Bayfront Place, Naples, 239-530-2225, and 5-7:30 p.m., North Naples.
The Junior Women’s Club Derby Dash will feature hors d’oeuvres, mint juleps, red and white wine, Prosecco, 50/50 raffles, hat and best-dressed contests and racing game prizes from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Ridgway Bar & Grill, 1300 Third St. S., Naples. $75. www.naplesjuniors.com
View the preshow and the race while enjoying mint juleps, Derby-style cuisine and entertainment by jazz singer Kate Davis and ensemble at “An Evening at the Kentucky Derby” from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. The center is at 2301 First St., Fort Myers. Tickets are $125 each and may be reserved by calling 239-333-1933. Proceeds will benefit the center’s continued operation and building restoration project.
