Different shapes of pasta should have different sauces. Penne and ziti and other tubular shapes should be topped with a thick sauce; pappardelle and other wide, flat pastas are great for creamy sauces; spaghetti is best with tomato-based and olive oil sauces to coat each strand, the thinner the strand the more delicate the sauce; and short pastas go well with chunky sauces.
