Gershwin this weekend
George Gershwin's sweeping "Rhapsody in Blue," with Alexandra Carlson as soloist, will be one of the cornerstones of a "Beethoven to Broadway" this weekend. Robert Dale Herrema will conduct the Naples Orchestra and Chorus in everything from a lullaby to Beethoven's famous Fifth ("Fate Knocks at the Door") Symphony.
Russian-born Carlson has won prizes at the Maria Yudina International Piano Competition in Russia and the Valentino Bucci International Competition in Italy.

Watch masterpieces from area artists take shape at For the Love of Art from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Naples Botanical Garden. This fundraising event for the Bayshore Cultural and Performing Arts Center celebrates the visual arts with a dynamic Alla Prima "art happening," in which Southwest Florida Pastel Society artists create paintings as guests observe and interact. These paintings will be included in the evening's live auction.
The event also will include wine and beer, heavy hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction of additional works of art. Proceeds will benefit the Bayshore CAPA building fund and Southwest Florida Pastel Society projects.

The Sowell Family Pickers play gospel, country, bluegrass and Southern style on banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, fiddles, guitar and bass. The Sowells will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive, Naples, as part of the Hyacinth Series. Doors will open at 3:15. Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted.
