Mercato First Thursday supported by the sounds of the blue grass infused Whole Tones looked like a success.  Coupled with the popular music were busy restaurants with outdoor dining, boutique stores open late and a display of the latest new cars.  Things kicked off at 7 and wrapped up just after nine.  Keep an eye out for the event each first Thursday of the month.

A successful networking social came together nicely when the Marco Chamber and the Marco Island Yacht Club teamed up.  The Yacht Club's scenic, comfortable facility lent itself perfectly to a full house that included business people, volunteers, Club members and more. Presently the Yacht Club is offering free 30 day trial memberships, info at 239-389-2084.

You could have called it a sellout crowd, except that admission, along with the wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres, were free of charge. Marco art lovers, perhaps along with wine and beer lovers, thronged the Marco Island Center for the Arts on Tuesday evening for the opening of a new show.

Local fashionistas came out in droves Friday night for Fashion's Night Out. Put on by local sisters Edma Arther and Emily Darieus, Friday night's fashion show and silent auction was a benefit for the Conquerers for Christ Youth Foundation, a Fort Myers based non-profit.

The Naples Concert Band drew an even larger holiday season crowd to 5th Avenue than usual.  Divided into musical sections like trumpets, saxophones, percussion and more with each playing 45 minute sets they anchored a busy evening that included other entertainment along the avenue.  A forty year tradition, the band provides scholarships to high school and college aged students who audition to play with the band with annual awards totalling around $6,000.

Full gallery »Goodwill SWFL Tux and Trees Gala 2011


There was plenty of holiday cheer in the air at Saturday Night's Tux and Trees Gala. The event, now in its fifth year, aimed to raise around $70,000 to support the mission of the Southwest Florida Goodwill Foundation. Twenty-seven decorated trees brought holiday tidings to the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers. The trees, which were on display in the art center all week, were all auctioned off in a live auction at the end of the night. Meanwhile, a very well stocked silent auction, plentiful hors devours and live music kept the crowd feeling downright jolly.

The Collier County Cat Coalition held its first-annual holiday Mingle and Jingle party. The event, which raised funds for the organization, included a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and lots of holiday food and cheer. Held at the Inn on Fifth, the entire event overlooked the Thursday night festivities on Fifth Avenue, so guests could enjoy all of the free music and performances from the comfort of their premium balcony seats. All the proceeds raised from Thursday's event will go to helping spay and neuter feral cats, and helping to place adoptable cats in permanent homes.

Under bright skies, the 56th annual Farm City BBQ was full to capacity. With country music jetting from the speakers, attendees lined up for a country style lunch headlined by grilled steak and all the fixings. The event celebrates national Farm City Week.

With 3 live music acts this month and an even larger crowd 3rd Thursday continued to show its popularity.  The Sistas, often seen entertaining in the area were present and well greeted as were singers Billy Bridger and also Jonathan Elliott and his band.  As usual the street was lined with vintage cars and retail shoppers were out in force too.  Look forward to this event in December.

Handbags were all the rage on Friday night at the 9th Annual Handbag Happy Hour at the Miromar Design Center. Event goers were treated to a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres, music, live auction and fashion show with all proceeds benefitting the Island Coast AIDS Network.

On Saturday night everyone came dressed in their finest for Prudential Realty's Sensational Tribute to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. The black tie optional event was a fundraiser for the Sunshine Kids Foundation, a charity that helps children battling cancer. Throughout the night, partygoers enjoyed a gourmet dinner, a live and silent auction and Sinatra inspired entertainment. With hopes of raising upwards of $30,000 for the foundation, this event, which has been happening in Naples for over 10 years, is one many look forward to every year.

The Naples International Film Festival kicked off Thursday night at the Naples Philharmonic with a red carpet event and the screening of East Fifth Bliss. In attendance were hundreds of film fans from around southwest Florida, dressed in their red carpet best.
