Like a star studded ball attendees showed up in formal attire and ready to party all to help the Humane Society of Naples. People brought their dogs and success stories about their adoptions. Additionally, there were pets on hand all ready for a home. Silent and live auctions were on the bill too with an array of prizes including artwork on canvas all donated. As everyone entered the banquet tent they were greeted by both live music and athletic entertainers decked out in feline costume prowling like cats. A fun time for all and a great benefit to homeless pets.

The “Viva La Marco” gala brought together Marco Island’s historical past and culinary present Saturday evening, to help provide the Marco Island Historical Society with a bright future. A dozen historical figures in period dress mingled with the modern day guests at the Marco Island Historical Museum’s Rose History Auditorium, willing to share their stories. Eleven were MIHS members, augmented by Don Juan Ponce de Leon, in full armor and sporting both a rapier and a dagger, portrayed by Carlos Bicho. Well over a dozen local eateries, food purveyors and private chefs donated the edibles for a feast of gourmet grazing.

The Naples Botanical Garden hosted an interesting and festive fund raiser for the Bayshore Cultural and Performing Arts Center (CAPA). Artists from the area and even the East Coast of Florida combined talents completing 4 floral pastels while working "in the round". Both a silent auction of various prizes was conducted followed by the live auction handled by Robin Bache Gray of the completed pastels. Botanical Garden members mingled with Board of Directors from Bayshore Capa and enjoyed both the artistic atmosphere coupled with fine food and drink.

Bark in the Park 2013 was sponsored again by SWFL Veterinary Specialists and benefited the Gulf Coast Humane Society. With perfect weather, attendees viewed and participated in everything from an owner-pet look alike contest and a pet costume contest to the Lee County K9 unit demonstration. Riverside Park was full where attendees and many pet related vendors like Petco met. On hand too were Greyhound and Golden Retriever adoption agencies who educated visitors on their causes.

Minnesota Twins Hammond stadium holds 9th year of Festival Of Beers Celebration. On Saturday the 26th the stadium opened its doors to hundreds of beer enjoyers and designated drivers to over 80 custom brews from around the world; in addition to the beers and soft drinks and water for designated drivers, the night featured entertainment by band SuperBot and food from Bahama Breeze Grill and Zesty Tomato Pizza and Grill. For the first 1000 to walk through the door a complimentary glass sampling glass was provided with holders, for a classy night of beer tasting, and taste they did. The event has become a highly regarded and executed standard for returning patrons of the event and new comers. Craft beers are defined as being not produced by large mass production facilities and exhibiting a custom and unique character and flavor. Each year the variety and number grow with the event.

Under perfect skies pet lovers, rescue groups, vendors, sponsors and spectators gathered for the parade. It took just a minute to realize that at least half the dogs and their owners were costumed one way or another. Sponsor Tony's Off 3rd provided refreshments while attendees got to meet everything from dogs up for adoption to therapy dogs and more. After registering and receiving a starting number, at 12 noon the dogs and their owners paraded in orderly fashion South on 3rd Street past Tommy Bahama's & back around the block for an awards ceremony. It looked like everyone enjoyed the event and given the number of dogs in close quarters the behavior couldn't have been better.

The line between dogs and reindeer, between dogs and elves, and even between dogs and Christmas presents got a little blurry Tuesday evening. The Esplanade was invaded by dozens of dolled-up dogs and their doting human attendants, for the Christmas Island Style Canine Christmas Parade. The pimped-out pooches, mostly of the apartment-friendly size, but including some dogs big enough to know better, strolled across the red carpet as their name was called, passing in review of the judges. They posed for pictures by Mila Bridger, with a portion of proceeds ironically benefiting For the Love of Cats, who had one cat on hand, looking askance at all the costumed canines.
