Tired of the same-old, same-old? This 1-year-old downtown cafe offers a unique dining experience at a surprisingly affordable price. Bella Maria offers a full palate of South American and Spanish cuisine.

Chilean dishes are primarily represented, partly because Maria Iribarren — who owns and operates the business with husband Carlos and son Franco — attended culinary school in Santiago.

Carlos' family hails from the Basque region of Spain, so it's not surprising that tapas, 22 varieties including seafood, fish, vegetable and meat, fill one page of the dinner menu.

No, it's not sleek and chic like most Fifth Avenue dining venues, but the homey charm is welcoming. Highlights are the industrial ceiling, complete with wooden rafters and walls filled with vivid artwork.
