In 1885 Thomas Edison purchased land on the Caloosahatchee River and had a winter home constructed. Dubbed the "Seminole Lodge", the inventor spent many winters on the property until his death in 1931.
Edison's friend Henry Ford purchased the neighboring property in 1915, calling it "The Mangoes."
Today, the Edison and Ford Estates house a museum, gardens and Edison's laboratory which are open to visitors, and offer guided tours of the properties as well as a boat ride along the river.
Botanical tours take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays. Tickets are $8 and $18. Electric launch tours on the Caloosahatchee River are regularly available at $5 per person.
