Tired of gimmicky Mexican places that favor style over substance? Try out some authentic Mexican home cooking at Maria’s, located on Old U.S. 41.

The décor isn’t over the top at Maria’s, which becomes a nightclub at about 10 p.m. Maria’s has a homegrown feel all the way down to the typos on the menu.

The restaurant offers some interesting choices beyond the usual dishes you would expect at a Mexican restaurant. If you’ve had enough burritos to last you a lifetime, try out the queso carne – pan-fried pork served with hot peppers, onion and cheese. Or the tampiquena – deep-fried chicken or beef served alongside three enchiladas.

Maria’s also has Mexican sandwiches (tortas), a variety of seafood dishes, and soups like menudo and hominy.
