The Six Mile Cypress Slough ( pronounced “slew” ) preserve occupies over 2,500 acres of preserved
land in Lee County. It’s a crowded ecosystem where every available niche is filled by a diverse array of
plants and animals....some of which are endangered.....that have adapted to life in a wetland. Included
in that group are otters, alligators, herons, butterflies and more live and thrive in the preserve. Migrating
birds utilize the preserve as a stop over for feeding and resting during their seasonal journeys. Addition-
ally, it serves as a corridor for wildlife by providing a safe route of travel.

The Slough is a natural drainage way collecting runoff water from a 33 square mile watershed area dur-
ing periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall. During the wet season ( June through October, ) a depth of 2
to 3 feet of water makes the Slough comparable to a wide and shallow freshwater stream. The preserve
also greatly limits local flooding by retaining storm water that will eventually filter into the ground to
replenish ground water and recharge shallow wells. A comfortable 1.2 mile long boardwalk provides
visitors with a wonderful opportunity to experience the unique beauty of Southwest Florida throughout
the year.
